Race Report - Reindeer Run 5K

I have had a string of race-fails lately - the ice out for the Como Park Turkey 5K, and then too cold weather Thanksgiving morning to take Sophie out to my planned 10K - so my running partner signed us up for the Reindeer Run 5K yesterday. He also signed Sophie up for the kid's race. So even though a snowstorm dumped a few inches on the twin cities Friday night and early Saturday morning, we were still determined to get down to Lake Harriet for the race.

On the way down, I called my mom and told her we were still running so she could meet us at the lake to watch Sophie during the 5K. When she called back to say she was stuck in her driveway and was trying to shovel out to get there in time, we probably should have taken it as a sign and turned around. But we didn't.

We got to Lake Harriet to find a bazillion cars snaking through the still mostly un-plowed streets trying to find parking. Finally found a spot - too late for the kid's race. My mom called - she was on the other side of the lake. Decided she would stay where she was and wait for the race to pass her. Which met the first two miles of the race with Sophie. Ever run a 5K with a three year old on your shoulders?

Two miles with Sophie on my shoulders (crying first because she wanted to go home, and then because she had to pee) later, I saw my mom. We then detoured off the race course to deposit Sophie in my mom's car so they could go find a bathroom. And I ran the last mile in. I couldn't find the finish line, so never saw the clock. I think it took close to an hour by the time all was said and done.

So one last big race fail to finish out 2010. Oh well. I'll take it as a positive omen that 2011 is going to be outstanding.

OMG, I'm sure that was incredibly frustrating, but it sort of makes a funny story. You are a SUPERHERO for running with your kid on your shoulders!!!

wow...talk about a whole new level of strength training! so sorry that all your runs lately have been so frustrating. not the way you plan on ending a year....maybe you'll have to look for a "resolution 5k" to give it one more go :) or maybe now you're done and just want to give it a rest...either way :)

Bummer that your last few races have been so crappy. My guess is that 2011 will be an outstanding race year for you.

Oh no, but you should be proud of you that you didn't quit and ran 2 miles carrying your daughter!

Um, that is downright HARDCORE. Carrying your kid, in the snow...in a 5k! That is pretty much the best race report ever!!

This was a great training run Heather! You will always remember this race and Sophie will too:) The next one will seem like a piece of cake. Cute pictures:)

Ohmigosh, you are a trooper! Pretty sure I would have turned right around!

But how much lighter did you feel that last mile? This could be a new training method!

Well that's one way to get an upper body work out. :)

Good for you for at least getting out there. If it snowed here I'd probably never run again. LOL!

That was quite an adventure! I bet you won't forget that race anytime soon. I haven't had good luck with that race- I've never been as cold as I was one year at that race. I didn't have the nerve to try it again this year. You are sure to have a great race season next year!

ROFLMAO! Love it. And sadly, been there done that! My sitter canceled on me at the last minute a couple years ago for the James Page Blubber Run (5K) so I ran it while pushing B in the stroller (he was 2?) and A had to run/walk it with me (no choice!)...I think he was only 4.5 years old. Some woman gave A piggy back rides on and off throughout the race to help me out...what a (drunk) saint!!!!

Oh man, I'm sooo sorry! I hate to laugh, but man you have had a bad streak going! I KNOW 2011 will be better!
Hope you're having a great week!

Oh, wow! I can't even imagine. Good for you for even doing it.

Here's to a better 2011 for both of us!
