First Time

My Tuesday night post-kettlebell recovery routine is to curl up on the couch (under my awesome race t-shirt quilt my mom made for me!) and watch the Biggest Loser. On tonight's episode, the contestants go to Dallas and run/walk a 5K with a bunch of people. Of course, they show a lot of people crying to overly dramatic music and going on and on about the huge accomplishment of finishing.

Which got me thinking . . . remember crossing the finish line of your first race? First marathon? I ran a lot of shorter races before I ever ran a marathon, but the finish line of that first marathon, Twin Cities 2006, is really what sticks out in my head. Even when I started running a lot, I never believed that I would ever want to or be able to run a marathon. I mean really, I am the book worm/band geek. Remember the mile run in gym class? Yeah, I had to walk during that. And it took me like 15 minutes. When I played tennis in high school, I spent most of my energy thinking up excuses to skip the warm up run.

So crossing the finish line of my first marathon, something I thought I would never even WANT to accomplish, was huge. Crossing that first finish line gave me a permanent confidence boost: "If I can finish a marathon, I can do ___________." I never would have thought, even after crossing that line, that I'd be here getting ready to take on marathon #4. The road hasn't always been easy, but there's no going back now!

Coming up to the finish line of Twin Cities!

Running defitely brings confidence. My daughter really wants to start, which of course, makes me happy. :) I ran in high school but then took many years off for college/grad school/kids. I will never forget finishing my first 5K as an adult.

I love the new look of the blog. I do think that we feel accomplished after completing whatever goals we set for ourselves.

I hope training is going well for you and I am looking forward to Madison in a few weeks.

Thank you so much for sharing your first marathon experience. I just signed up for my first marathon, which is in October and I'm excited but also scared :) I enjoy reading your blog and your report about your first time gave me an extra motivation!! Any advice you have for a first timer?

I've run 17 marathons and countless other races since my first marathon, but the finish my first will always stick out the most.

When I was working with a trainer, she suggested I set a 5K as a goal. I almost choked to death from laughing....
now I'm just two weeks away from my first "official" 1/2 marathon!

Ran my first 1/2 on my own terms, that was an old post!

I so want to get one of those blankets made from all my race shirts! I seen lots of ads in the back of Runner's World and Silent Sports for it.

Is your trainer an RKC? Is she going through the certification? I will try and remember her name when I'm there.

The twins benefited from the ear tubes...they both were getting multiple ear infections before they got them. Hard to watch them get put under! The unknown of my first marathon is what sticks out, had having enough gas in the tank to keep running to the finish line was extremely gratifying. Have a great week!

Hi Heather,
This was such a great post!! I felt the same way when I finished my first ten mile. I remember thinking...Holy crap, I have never run this far before...and I am still standing:) I know that when I run my first marathon I will have some of those same feelings of accomplishment!

I love that picture:) Is Twin Cities a good one for a first one? Just thinking:)

Great post! Last night's TBL brought back some memories for me too. I will never forget my first ever finish line (a half marathon) or my first marathon finish line.

I don't watch BL but my mom does and I saw some of it...the woman that took over 2 hours. She finished! That is what counts. My first tri, I was third from last but my parents were at the finish line like I was first!

And how about TX being 75% obese, WOW!

I cried when I crossed the finish line at the Disney Marathon back in 2007. And, I thought, if I can run a marathon, I can definitely have a baby; I think maybe having a baby is easier ;)

Awesome post! Wow! A race T-shirt quilt...that is such a neat idea! I think the finish line of the marathon has got to be the most memorable one for me too...and painful...I was hurting so bad!

ahhhh I can't wait for that feeling...one more week! Cannot wait! What great timing on your post. I to never thought I would want to/be able to run a marathon, and here I am, just about to do it! :-)

There is nothing like your first marathon. Nothing. I still love to run them but the emotions aren't as intense as the first time I ran one. It's so true though...once you cross that finish line, there isn't anything you CAN'T do. :)

Great post! I had a similar experience... ran for quite a while and didn't even think about running a marathon. There have been quite a few races that I've been pretty choked up at the finish because I couldn't believe I did it. Now we can do anything we set our minds to!
